We typically don’t give our joints much thought – it’s only when the pain kicks in that we really stop to consider what we can do to make it stop.

It turns out that 23% of US adults aged 45-65 suffer from arthritis. That’s right. That means that just being an adult in the US makes you a pretty good contender and the closer to 45 you are, the higher the possibility (although arthritis has been known to hit as early as 19). There are three forms of arthritis:

  1. Osteoarthritis is the most common form and it impacts the parts of body that support body weight (hip, knee, spinal cord)
  2. Gout is extremely painful on one specific joint and is accompanied by redness and sensitivity. The good news is that unless you have a genetic disposition to tend towards gout, it typically doesn’t return after the first attack.
  3. Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by an autoimmune reaction in which your immune system attacks your joints.

A fourth but rare condition known as Bechterew’s disease, impacts the joints of your spinal column. Scary stuff.

So what can you do now?

Curb arthritis in three steps:

  1. Take advantage of beneficial supplements that will work to keep arthritis at bay, including cod liver oil, glucosamine, antioxidants (selenium, vitamin E and C) and pantothenic acid (vitamin B5).
  2. Fight inflammation like a champ with ginger and help alleviate painful symptoms.
  3. Make nutrition your secret weapon. Those suffering from osteoarthritis should stay away from saturated and animal fats. It might also be wise to avoid solanine which is found in potatoes (not sweet potatoes), peppers, tomatoes and eggplant since it could prove toxic if not properly digested. Those experiencing gout should increase selenium intake (walnuts, cod, beef) and drink lots of water. While those hit with rheumatoid arthritis should avoid high-protein foods and alcohol.

Don’t wait for the pain to start. Get to a better life now.
