Driving into Spain’s Andalusian city of Seville I saw a Street vendor at the road side selling sacks of oranges, I thought I would be seeing a lot of those famous oranges during my stay, but I did not.

Seville is a very picturesque city.  The architecture is delightful, the pace of life is that of a village within a city, the streets are bustling with cafes, bars and bodeguitas offering mainly wines and local tapas.

Speaking with the owner of one side street bodeguita, he told me that most of the wine here is from the Duero river valley, almost 350 miles north of Seville, or the most famous of Spain’s wine regions, Rioja.  The main selection however lies with the fortified wines.

Seville is approximately 60 miles from Jerez de la Frontera, the only place in the world to make Sherry and it’s good to see it so popular with the people of this region.

I started my sherry tasting with Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez.  The most known to me due to the casks been used for whisky maturation after the sherry makers have finished with them.

To accompany them, I tried a selection of local tapas.  There are many vegetarian options, especially spinach with chick peas.  Matured fishes are a delicacy and for the meat eaters Bull is on offer, including the bulls tail.  Expect everything to be served with mini bread sticks.

The prices here are not what I expected from a city.  The sherries often start from 1,50€ and tapas from 2,50€ around the city centre and old town.

You also don’t need to stick with the tapas size, most dishes are available in full or half portions.  With so much on offer I stick with the tapa size, thinking that if I were to live here I may never eat a full meal again and snack my way through the days.

Seville is still oozing its traditional Spanish charm.  Flamenco dancing is still performed, typical produce still served and its’ rich history is all around.

This city is proud of the history and people that have built it, and so it should be.
